Topline: Joe Biden solidified his comeback in the Democratic race to defeat Donald Trump in the November election, leaving major upsets in his wake as rivals Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Mike Bloomberg failed to make the gains they had hoped for in key states.

  • Biden wins nine states: The former vice president, whose campaign appeared to be on life support just weeks ago after a poor showing in Iowa, was resurgent across several key states and is projected to win the key state of Texas over favourite Bernie Sanders, with 30% of the vote, a narrow lead over Sanders’ 28.3%.
  • But, Biden’s victory states barely saw him on the ground in the runup to Super Tuesday: He also won in Arkansas, Alabama, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Minnesota and Tennessee, but spent little to no time campaigning in those states, instead focusing on North Carolina and Virginia. He was particularly successful among black and older voters.
  • In contrast, Bloomberg’s Super Tuesday efforts fell short: The former New York Mayor failed to win any state, despite betting on Super Tuesday with the biggest spend on adverts, and  after entering the Democratic race late and bypassing the first debates. More below. Tuesday was his first appearance on the ballot, and could be his last if he drops out.
  • Warren also slips away, loses in her home state: Warren's loss in Massachusetts indicates a drop in support within her core support groups: women, liberal voters and white, college educated voters. Some have accused her of splitting the vote among progressives, in contrast to centrist candidates Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg who rallied round Biden at the last minute.
  • Sanders is projected to take California: The Golden State is the plum prize, with 415 delegates on the table, and Sanders, who went into the primary as the frontrunner, could win the majority of those, AP projects. Sanders took his home state of Vermont, as well as Utah and Colorado. Sanders is more popular among Latino and younger voters, but turnout among the latter fell short, even below 2016 levels.

Biden's win boosted U.S. stock futures, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising more than 2% on Wednesday morning, while S&P 500-linked futures also rose 2%.
